The Sidlaw Hills lie to the north of Dundee and form a natural barrier between the Carse of Gowrie (and the River Tay) and the Valley of Strathmore to the north. Although not particularly high, Craigowl being the highest top at 455 metres, they command excellent uninterrupted panoramic views. The range stretches from Perth almost to Forfar, although the main section (for the purposes of this site) is from Dunsinane Hill to Craigowl, as shown in the map below. |
The map below shows the start points of the walks

Some of the tops are very popular with local walkers, particularly at the weekend, i.e. Lundie Crags, Balluderon Hill and Auchterhouse Hill. However, it is unusual to meet anyone on Gaskhill or on the Meridian Monument approach to Lundie Crags. The walk descriptions are supplemented with photographs and maps. An index of the photographs only is available, as are the maps without the route markings.
The walks are as follows (from west to east) and start from the places marked as numbered red triangles on the map above.
Start 1: Dunsinane Hill, Black Hill and Kings Seat
Start 2: Gaskhill
Start 3: Lundie Crags from Tullybaccart
Start 4:Meridian Monument and Lundie Crags from near Newtyle and Kinpurnie Hill
Start 5:Auchterhouse Hill, Balluderon Hill and Craigowl
